Materials List ✏️
Here’s our mandatory list of materials your student should have for an awesome drawing course. Students will need the following before the first week of class:
-
Any pencil set will do, the larger the range the better. 2H to 8B is ideal.
If you’re looking for higher quality, we like the Faber-Castel 12 pencil set.
-
Different than “compressed charcoal” or anything labeled “Soft Medium Hard”- those are not the material needed.
Must be titled Vine or Willow Charcoal for a soft, smooth blending experience.
-
We recommend General’s charcoal pencils or Conté à Paris charcoal pencils.
-
A kneaded eraser is a flexible, moldable eraser that is perfect for gently lifting graphite or charcoal without damaging the paper.
-
Very useful for tiny details, we recommend the Tombow MONO zero eraser.
For easier searching, precision erasers often look like mechanical pencils!
-
These are used to keep your student’s charcoal drawings from smudging after they’re complete.
-
We recommend a blending stump kit or a “Sofft knife”.
Blending is crucial for achieving smooth transitions and realism in your drawings.
-
While any pencil sharpener can be used for graphite pencils, we highly recommend the General’s ALL-ART red sharpener. It’s specifically designed with the optimal angle for sharpening charcoal pencils.
-
Newsprint sketchbooks are softer and smoother than regular paper.
12 × 18 is recommended, but the bigger the better.
-
We know this is a big one!
Any brand of sketchbook will work, but we recommend choosing one labeled as a DRAWING or SKETCH pad (not Newsprint, Watercolor, or Mixed Media).
Don’t stress about the brands- any similar supplies will work just fine!
